After some spectacular weather in January, beach weather in Southern California has been lousy. Cold, windy and small surf. Hardly a recipe to encourage you to throw the board on the car, climb into the 4/3 wetsuit and paddle out into cold mush.
But one of the beauties of California is that just 90 minutes away in the car it’s already summer. So we’ve been visiting nude resorts in the Palm Springs area. We recently checked out Living Waters Spa in Desert Hot Springs. It’s about 20 minutes from Palm Springs in a rather eclectic community that ranges from super-luxury resorts, to low-income housing.
From the street, Living Waters Spa is clean and simple, but won’t get your heart racing about what lies in store. But once you meet owners Jeff and Judy Bowman, soak in the natural mineral water Jacuzzi, grab a lounge chair with views of snow capped mountains, and enjoy the 82 degree sun in February, you’ll forget you’re in Desert Hot Springs and drift to another world. We had a great day.
There was a great crowd of young and old, couples and singles, men and women. Everyone was friendly, relaxed, and happy to be there. One couple was in a band, and the woman would occasionally quietly sing in the Jacuzzi. Another was a sculptor, working naked in the sun on his clay sculpture of a naked woman. The white washed walls, desert plants, and crystal clear natural mineral waters combine to relax the senses, restore the soul and encourage you to smile for no reason.
It was one of the most diverse groups we’ve found and enjoyed that. Something about athletic 20-somethings mingling with 50+ somethings doing sculpture, all naked, all relaxed makes the world seem like a better place. It’s not as exhilarating as a day surfing, but when you need to decompress in a serene setting it’s a great option.
We’re hoping for some real surf (predictions are encouraging for March 15th) but we won’t be too disappointed next time surf is small if it means a trip to Living Waters Spa.
