For the 2nd year in a row, we got to San Francisco for a combination of business and fun. The fun is participating in the Bay to Breakers run, a massive street party that spans the city of San Francisco.
Yeah, there are some people who really run, but the real action is the party that includes naked people, wild costumes, floats, drinking, music and a really good time.
There were press releases that “race authorities” wanted to eliminate the drinking and nudity. But public opinion seems to be OK with fun and good times – it’s that free-spirited attitude that makes San Francisco such a great city, and Bay to Breakers a legendary race, instead of just another running event. You figure that out pretty quickly when you see couples and families setting up along the race route as if it’s a parade. Cheering the runners, high-fiving the naked people, having their pictures taken with those in the wildest costumes.
This year a heat wave was fully in charge of the area, and temperatures were in the 80’s all the way to the normally frigid coastline at Ocean Beach. Hot weather and the energetic attitude of 65,000 participants meant the 2009 event was just as wild, fun and exciting as ever. Long live Bay to Breakers and free spirits. It’s way too easy to be serious. Just watch the news, look at your 401K statement or home value. We all need to relax, get naked, feel creative, have a drink and celebrate. It’s a short ride, make the most of it.
